    What Is CNC Lathe?

    2024/11/11      view:

A CNC lathe is basically a computer-controlled machine tool through numerical input, and it works on taper turning, hard turning, spherical generation, facing, cut-off, knurling, drilling, and grooving. On the other hand, it works on the basis of exact programming. This helps to maximize productivity and increases the accuracy of the machining process.

    Advantages of CNC Lathes

    - Higher capacity

    - Greater precision

    - Greater safety

    - Reduced turnaround time

    Types of CNC Lathes

By number of working axes on which each operates. This classification touches on the workpiece's manipulation during machining.

    2-Axis CNC Lathe

This is the basic model that comprises X and Z linear axes. It is ideal for machining both inside and outside, face operations, central drilling, and tapping. Milling cannot be done on this type of lathe.

    3-Axis CNC Lathe

With a C axis and live tooling system added, it would enable milling, boring, and tapping operations, including helical milling with synchronized rotation.

    4-Axis CNC Lathe

Introduce the use of a Y-axis to permit off-center machining operations. It's better suited for more difficult and irregular operations.

    5-Axis CNC Lathe

This lathe also has an additional turret, with each turret holding two axes and a C-axis on the rotary spindle, thereby allowing the use of two tools simultaneously and greatly increasing machining speed.

6 or More Axis CNC Lathe

The addition of more axes further offers flexibility and productivity, but at higher costs.

By Machining Requirement & Arrangement of the Main Spindle

    - High-Speed Lathe: It has a simple structure, headstock, tailstock, tool holder, and three or four-speed transmissions.

Engine lathe: It can bear higher maximum ranges of metals in different sizes and at different speeds.

Turret Lathe: Due to the turret structure, it can install multiple tool holders.

Toolroom lathe: This is the most basic type for beginners, startups, and small workshops.

    By Position of Lathe Spindle

Vertical CNC lathe: Its spindle is at right angles to the horizontal plane. Work is clamped by a big diameter round table.

Horizontal CNC lathe: Can also be classified as flatbed and slant bed. The slant bed-type design allows more rigidity and easier chip removal.
